Chthonic has revealed a second clip, “Oceanquake,” from symphonic extreme metal masters’ upcoming live album and video, Chthonic Megaport 2021, scheduled for release on May 19.

“Oceanquake” features an appearance by Audrey Tang, a longtime Chthonicfan who currently holds the seat of Digital Minister in Taiwan’s cabinet.

“Audrey’s voice has been added with Machine Effect,” explains frontman Freddy Lim. “I’ve never known anybody’s voice that fit in so well with this kind of effect. It makes this CHTHONIC DrumNBass remix so unique!”

After making history by successfully managing the COVID-19 pandemic, Taiwan was able to move forward with the Megaport Festival, the first large-scale rock festival since the unprecedented global lockdown. Taking place March 27-28 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, the festival featured more than 100 artists on 10 stages. Founded in 2006 by Chthonic‘s Freddy Lim, who left the organizing team after being elected as a member of Taiwanese Parliament in 2016, Megaport Festival attracts tens of thousands of people every year, with this year’s festival selling out its 20,000 tickets within five minutes.

While Taiwan is considered home of Austronesian peoples and a mystic island nation in the Orient, advanced technologies, modern cities, and upholding human rights and progressive values are also part of the image of Taiwan, and Chthonic gives the best interpretation of the contrasting images of the country. Chthonic‘s lyrics are inspired by Taiwanese mythology, folk stories and history, and the music incorporates elements of traditional Taiwanese folk music, enka and sorrowful melody from Taiwanese opera, accompanied by traditional Taiwanese musical instruments, such as hena, zheng – also known as “box zither”- and pgaku flute. Contemporary symphonic black metal, melodic death metal, blood-boiling riffs and solos are also integral parts of Chthonic‘s music.

Several of Chthonic‘s albums have entered the In Taiwanese pop-music charts, and the band has been awarded the Golden Melody Award, the Taiwanese version of the Grammy Award. With exception of its earlier works, Chthonic‘s albums include Seediq Bale (2007), Mirror of Retribution (2009), Takasago Army (2011) and Bú-Tik (2013) were all released worldwide, with positive feedback from music critics. The band took on a lower profile with a reduced number of performances after Lim’s election into the Parliament in 2016, but they still released the album Battlefields of Asura in 2018, which won the Golden Melody Award for Best Band, as well as a number of other nominations. In 2019, Chthonic held a concert with a symphony orchestra in the square in front of Taiwan’s Presidential Office. It attracted 50,000 people, and its live video and audio was digitally released in 2020.

From Fuji Rock and Summer Sonic in Japan to Ozzfest in the US, Download in the UK and WOA in Germany, Chthonic has performed at major music festivals around the world, and has had toured hundreds of shows in Europe, North America and Asia. The group has also worked with many internationally renowned artists, including Lamb Of God’s Randy Blythe, Trivium’s Matt Heafy, guitarist Marty Friedman, Japanese folk singer Hajime Chitose, and Hong Kong diva Dennise Ho.

South Texas Metalcore Act Scarlett O’Hara Returns with “Friction”

Don’t let the name fool you – anyone familiar with legendary South Texas metalcore act SCARLETT O’HARA knows that their name may be dainty but that’s where any trace of delicacy disappears, as evidenced by the band’s first single in three years, “Friction.”

Watch the video for “Friction” here:

“Growth is commonly seen as a good thing, but oftentimes, the road to get there is harder than we expect,” says guitarist Logan Burns. “‘Friction’ is about that road. It’s about the difficult path to your goals, the constant obstacles in your way, and the incredible people that you meet along the way. We hope that ‘Friction’ will help people with identifying their unique struggles associated with growth and inspire them to endure.”

“Friction” is available today via digital music providers.

Formed in 2008, SCARLETT O’HARA has pushed the metalcore genre further with a high-paced signature style, now known as South Texas Metalcore, an unrelenting barrage of sound that evokes images of being kicked in the face by an angry bull.

After the release of their highly praised 2010 Rise Records debut Lost in Existence, the McAllen, TX-based band went on hiatus, finally regrouping for the 2018 release of their sophomore album, Welcome Back To The Brodeo. The critically acclaimed album debuted on several US Billboard charts including: #19 Hard Rock Album Sales, #20 HeaterSeeker Albums and #1 Heatseeker (South Central), as well as #25 on the iTunes Metal chart for its release week.

The band has most recently teamed up with Grammy nominated producer Erik Ron (GodsmackPanic! at the DiscoNew Years Day) to deliver another molten slab of pure platinum rock in “Friction.” Stay tuned for more new music from SCARLETT O’HARA!

Mac Sabbath Journeys Through Dystopian Fast-Food World in Innovative New Pop-Up Book

Mac Sabbath has revealed details on their first book, Drive Thru Metal, but don’t expect a stereotypical biography from the fast food-themed parody kings. There’s plenty of “juice” inside, albeit in the form of burgers cooking in the kitchen as the four members of Mac Sabbath take fans on a journey through a dystopian fast-food world polluted by its own waste in an innovative hybrid pop-up book.

Watch an amazing teaser video for the book here:

Mysterious Mac Sabbath frontman Ronald Osbourne comments on the book, “What’s that? A pop-up book is not what you were expecting? Well SUFFER! ….and you’re welcome.”

Drive thru Metal Mac Sabbath

Available via Poposition Press, Drive Thru Metal features illustrations by Gris Grimly, well-known for his darkly whimsical children’s books and the upcoming Netflix film adaptation of his Pinocchio book, and will be available in Regular and Special Editions. Both editions are available in limited quantities, so be sure to pre-order now to reserve a copy of this piece of Drive Thru Metal history! Pre-orders are available here.

Mac Sabbath Character Drawings

Both editions of Drive Thru Metal include pop-up scenes highlighting “The Factory,” “The Ascension” and “Utopia” and include a special vinyl surprise with seven Mac Sabbath stories, including “Organic Funeral,” Sweet Beef” and “N.I.B.B.L.E.” The Special Edition is a super limited version complete with a foil stamped cover, a Gris Grimly art print and ketchup and mustard splattered vinyl surprise.

Mixing raucous comedy with borderline-horrific theatrics, the only thing more petrifying than impending health problems resulting from years of overeating is a Mac Sabbath show. Mac Sabbath puts on a theatrical, multimedia stage show – complete with a smoking grill, laser-eyed clowns, bouncing burgers and many more magical surprises… basically anything and everything an unwary show-goer could ever want in their wildest dreams. The band has been named by Buzzfeed as one of the “13 Metal Bands You Didn’t Know How to React To”, and as LA’s “Best Tribute Band” by LA Weekly.

New England Extreme Metal Act Aversed Reveals Second Video, “Laboratory,” From Upcoming Album

New England-based extreme metal quintet AVERSED has revealed a video for the scientific-inspired track “Laboratory” from the band’s upcoming release, Impermanent. Watch the video for “Laboratory” today via Toilet Ov Hell or here:

“‘Laboratory’ turns self-reflection and actualization on its head, discussing the consequences of ignoring and exploiting the natural world for our own gain regardless of its spiritual or intellectual benefit,” says drummer Jeff Saltzman. “In this interconnected world, we sow the seeds of our mechanized destruction if we only look inward rather than aim to help others.”

“Laboratory” was inspired by Saltzman’s own time working in a biology laboratory and its effects on the world outside of the lab. “Despite our cutting-edge research, we weren’t helping a soul,” he says. “What’s the point? ‘Laboratory’ is my criticism of the pursuit of scientific progress just for the sake of progress.”

Aversed’s Impermanent is set for release on March 19. Mixed and mastered by Christian Donaldson (CryptopsyThe AgonistShadow of Intent), Impermanent illustrates Aversed’s unique approach to songwriting with nine diverse compositions full of catchy hooks and vast melodies. Aversed offered fans a glimpse of the album last month with a video for the title track.

Watch the video for “Impermanent here:

Pre-orders for Impermanent are available here. In addition to the album, a variety of bundles are also available, as well as a brand new t-shirt design.

With the release of Impermanent, Aversed presents a metal experience cultivated of unprecedented beauty and torment. The third release following 2011’s self-titled EP and 2016’s Renewal EP, Impermanent marks a turning point for the New England scene veterans as they pivot from melodic death metal towards a nuanced balance of blackened and orchestral melodic metal.

Classically Infused Metal Collective Lost Symphony Reveals “A Murder of Crows”

Lost Symphony, the classical-metal ensemble headed up by multi-instrumentalist and producer Benny Goodman with a host of accomplish guest musicians, has released the third single from their upcoming Chapter II album – a track entitled “A Murder of Crows,” was inspired by the memory of late guitarist Oli Herbert, who was an early contributor to Lost Symphony.

During the funeral for the All That Remains guitarist nearly two years ago, a group of crows were said to have collective above the gathering. “It was often thought that a large group of crows decided the outcome of other birds,” Goodman says. “A large gathering is called a murder of crows and was often an omen of bad things to come.”

Watch the video for “A Murder of Crowshere:

A Murder of Crows” features guest appearances by guitarist Jon Donais (Anthrax, Shadows Fall) and Jimi Bell (Autograph, House of Lords).

“Working with Lost Symphony was such a blast for me,” says Donais, “It’s an honor to play on a project with some of the best heavy metal and rock guitarists out there. This is a must for anyone who loves shred guitar!”

Just months after Lost Symphony raised the bar on classical-infused metal with their debut, Chapter I, the ensemble has returned with a new single, “Conflagration,” from the upcoming Chapter II (set for release on October 16).

Chapter II pre-orders are available here.

Primarily composed before, yet eerily perfect for the age of the Pandemic, the eight-track opus of Chapter II strains beauty through aural apocalypse. The collective founded by multi-instrumentalist and producer Benny Goodman and comprising his brother Brian (compositions, arrangement), Cory Paza (bass, guitar), Kelly Kereliuk (guitar), Paul Lourenco (drums), and Siobhán Cronin (violin, viola, electric violin) has once again welcomed a revolving cast of virtuosos to join them for the next phase. This installment includes Marty Friedman, David Ellefson, Jeff Loomis and many more.

The album’s first two singles, “Conflagration” and “No Exit,” feature performances by Oli Herbert, Matt LePierre and Conrad Simon, and David Ellefson, Jeff Loomis and Marty Friedman, respectively.

Listen to “Conflagration

Watch “No Exit

Lost Symphony was set in motion when Benny Goodman invited guitarists Kereliuk and Simon to add another dimension to the classical demo he had composed. An early recording of “Leave Well Enough Alone,” which appears on Chapter II, made its way to All That Remains co-founder and guitar hero Oli Herbert, who quickly jumped aboard as a chief collaborator. Upon arrival, Chapter I immediately received widespread critical acclaim. Metal Insider described it as “the great collision between metal and classical music,” and BraveWords claimed it has “taken the scene by storm.”

Mindless Self Indulgence, Psychostick, Aesthetic Perfection Members Lend Voices to New Animated Music Series X-RL7

The debut episode of X-RL7, a pixel-art cyberpunk animated series and music project featuring the voice acting skills of numerous alternative rock, metal and electronic musicians, is available today.

The series, created by Mike Evans of UK based electronic rock act MiXE1, chronicles the exploits of the fictional band X-RL7 in a mix of comedy, social commentary and original music.

Fueled by mysterious dream-like visions, the show follows the enigmatic X-RL7 frontman Omega as he navigates the trials and tribulations of the music industry alongside guitarist/producer PJand flamboyant larger-than-life band manager Alfie in their journey to make it to the top of the musical food chain. Featuring a myriad of colorful characters and original electronic rock tunes set against a cyberpunk-inspired futuristic backdrop.

“I’m absolutely delighted (and terrified) to launch X-RL7 at last,” Evans says. “The series has been in development for over a year and a half and represents the amalgamation of so many of my passions – my love of pixel art, music, comedy, social commentary, romance, cyberpunk and conspiratorial themes all coming together in one unique pixelated cocktail.”

The series is free to watch.

Check out the first episode here:

For a full overview of the series, including clips from all episodes and featuring the voices of all guest musicians, visit https://youtu.be/Khm2fRrcDu8.

The Origins of X-RL7

The origins of the X-RL7 project can be traced back to 2016 in the form of an unfinished point and click adventure game developed by Evans with the concept revolving around a music journalist and other fictional bands with original music. After moving on from this, Evans formed Youtube video series Project Anything, honing his animation skills, while still creating music with his band MiXE1. Still enamored by one of the songs he penned for the game (“Apotheosis Man”), Evans picked up the remnants of the project in late 2018 and started repurposing it as a video/music series with a brand new story, focusing largely around one specific band – X-RL7.

Along the way Evans approached musical friends and past collaborators to lend their voices to various characters and songs. As the series took shape, he approached others in the alternative music scene, some of whom he has been a fan of for many years, who kindly got involved and delivered fantastic performances as their animated counter parts.

Musicians who have lent their voices to the show so far include:

  • Jimmy Urine (Mindless Self Indulgence)
  • Rob “Rawrb” Kersey (Psychostick)
  • Daniel Graves (Aesthetic Perfection)
  • Lauren Babic (Red Handed Denial, Crazy Eighty Eight)
  • Nyxx (Nyxx)
  • Erlend Eilertsen (Essence of Mind, Lights A.M.)
  • Mikey AlterRed (AlterRed)
  • Richard Kaltenhauser (Machine Rox)
  • Natasha Cox (AL1CE, Mankind Is Obsolete)
  • Sasha Travis (AL1CE)
  • Pete Crane (SHIV-R)
  • Lawrie Bayldon (Studio-X)
  • Bridgette Hill (Studio-X)
  • Mike Evans (MiXE1)
  • Lee Towson (MiXE1)
  • Chris Voigt (Greasy Tales, Sexual Lobster)
  • Michael Joseph (Rockstar Esoterica)

“I am very blessed that so many super talented artists have taken the time to lend their voices to the project, embracing the world of X-RL7 and the music,” says Evans.

(HED) P.E. Announces Twelfth Studio Album “Class of 2020”

Legendary SoCal artists (HED) P.E. have revealed details for their twelfth studio album, Class of 2020, set for release on August 21 via legendary Californian independent label Suburban Noize Records. The date also marks the 20th anniversary of the group’s breakthrough album, Broke.

Class of 2020 Cover Art

On Class of 2020, (HED) P.E. gets back to the raw essentials, utilizing old-school punk-rock guitar tones and aggressive, unfiltered vocal stylings at the core of their trademark sound. Longtime fans will find that Class of 2020 is a return to the classic sound of early (HED) P.E. albums.

“We were on the road in the middle of a tour when the COVID-19 pandemic hit full force,” comments frontman Jared Gomes. “Like everyone else on the planet, we were faced with some unprecedented challenges. As a small business owner of an independent band, I was faced with an additional set of challenges with the tour being canceled and making it back home from Rhode Island to Idaho. When I got home, I immediately got inspired creatively and hit the studio to smash out this record. For this one, we took it all back to our roots with a back-to-basics approach to try and capture that true G-Punk sound of our earlier albums.”

In an effort to bring Class of 2020 around full circle and connect it with (Hed) P.E’s impressive back catalog, the album cover is an homage to the group’s breakthrough album Broke, which celebrates its 20th anniversary a day after the new studio album is released. While planning to the milestone anniversary for (Hed) P.E., Jared was able to connect with former members DJ Product and original guitarist Chad “Chizad” Benekos and rekindle their creative flame. DJ Product created artwork for the Class of 2020 album and added his trademark scratching over some tracks, while original (Hed) P.E. guitarist Chizad blessed the band with a blazing solo on “Greedy Girl“. The unholy union that many fans never thought possible came together to connect the past and present incarnations of (Hed) P.E. and to enhance Class of 2020 in a meaningful way.

(Burning Hot Events earns from qualifying purchases.)

When discussing the album, Gomes talks about the moniker “Class of 2020” having dual meaning for him and the band. “I had the title ‘Class of 2020’ as a working title for some time now,” he explains. “We had made hoodies with the Class of 2020 on them, but it was originally intended to be a statement about the band being here 20 years later. A whole new Class of (HED) P.E., so to speak. Once the pandemic broke out, this title took on a new profound meaning. The Class of 2020 never really graduated. The Class of 2020 will go down in history for several different reasons.”

(HED) P.E. are the pioneers of the G-Punk sound, which fuses together punk-rock, metal, hip-hop and reggae. The band has toured the world for 20 years sharing the stage with the likes of Suicidal Tendencies, System of a Down, KORN, Tech N9ne, Tool as well as the original Black Sabbath on the iconic Ozzfest tour. (HED) P.E. experienced a creative resurgence after signing with Suburban Noize Records in the early 2000s and was instrumental in developing the booming underground scene.

Preorders for Class of 2020 are available now here.

Class of 2020 track listing:

  1. First Blood
  2. Watch It Burn
  3. No Days Off
  4. Death Awaits
  5. Last Call
  6. Ole Time Sake
  7. Greedy Girl
  8. Nothing Lasts 4ever (The Ballad of C19)
  9. We The People
  10. Overdue

Official Music Video for Viral K-pop Smash “Lucky Cat” Released by DRMAGDN Cyborg Drummer/DJ

An official video for “Lucky Cat,” viral K-pop smash DRMAGDN Cyborg Drummer/DJ, is available today.

Watch the Video Now Here:

Official Lyric Video | Official Audio Stream | Spotify

Lucky Cat” is the first single from DRMAGDN Cyborg Drummer/DJ’s upcoming debut album, aptly titled Escape From NYC. The song literally came to him complete in a dream three years ago. In the dream, it went massively viral, had its own dance, and came at a time of real human need – which is right now.

DRMAGDN says, “The whole process was surreal. I have never been given an entire song complete in a dream with melody, lyrics and even a dance that went viral around the world before. I met K-pop singer Josephine Cho at another session I was producing. When she started singing, I was shocked cause it was literally the voice from my dream. I had another deja vu flashback to the second half of my dream when the worldwide shutdown happened because the song came at a time of massive human need. So, I bumped my song ‘RIOT!’ to be released on June 5 and fast tracked ‘Lucky Cat’ for a May release. The song is currently almost to the one million total view/play mark across all socials and streaming services since being released a month ago. I am excited to finally drop the fun viral music video.”

The song is a catchy female K-Pop EDM hit available in five Asian languages and English. It features Korean pop singer Josephine Cho and was mastered by Huntley Miller (Grammy for Zedd’s “Clarity” Record and Lizzo) with mix consulting by Johnny Nice (Rihanna’s “Umbrella” and Evanescence). Additional keyboards by Plastic Cannon/Alan Markley (Maggie Rogers and Ramin Karmiloo) and lead “meow” vocals by Sophia Angelica (singer/songwriter/activist). All other production, songwriting, keys, programming, drums and mixing by DRMAGDN Cyborg Drummer/DJ aka Charlie Zeleny.

Lucky Cat” has total combined views/plays of 835,000+ in just a month since the release. It is considered a Big Trend on TikTok with 635,000+ views, plus has garnered 55,000+ views on YouTube, 21,000+ Spotify plays, 12,500+ Spotify monthly listeners, 121,000+ SoundCloud plays and 5,000+ “Likes”/shares across Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. The song has been placed on 30+ Spotify playlists and is now on major label Sony Music’s FILTR Emerging Electronic playlist.

DRMAGDN gave $100 to charity on the day of the release to start things off ($50 to Mount Sinai’s Coronavirus Fund and $50 to friend Chris Rybin’s Kidney Transplant Fund). He also donated $3,500+ worth of medical supplies he found in storage to Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, New York. View his Instagram post about it here:
